Jesselton was the former name of Kota Kinabalu and the entire North Borneo was owned by a private English company. After the WW11, both the Japanese as well as that Allied forces has completely destroyed KK, Sabah was handed over to the crown and reconstruction began.
Jesselton was renamed Kota Kinabalu after independence. For history of KK, go to

Today KK boasts so many shopping Malls, some are ultra modern mega mall. The city is overcrowded with people and traffic. There are so many tourists. Notably, many younger Koreans and Chinese. I saw more girls group than guys.
Certainly KK is as good or even better alternative than Phuket or Bali for the ranges of outdoor activities as well AS abundance of fresh seafood. Shopping from street vendors to high end fashion products are readily available. Imitation products are everywhere especially shoes and bags. Numerous Spa and massage parlours are everywhere.
KK has a long waterfront with bars and restaurants that provide diners with sunset view. Bars with live bands music provide entertainment while guests enjoy the alcohol in the company of friends or partners. It looks like a great place to socialize. I must say the waterfront entertainment area is very impressive comparable to any best nightspots in surrounding countries.
Food are really cheap and good. There are so many seafood restaurants run by both local or Chinese. At the market, the BBQ seafood are popular. Besides seafood are also local Muslim and Indian restaurants. Not to mention Chinese restaurants are everywhere and many Bah Kut Teh outlets.
For seafood, pick your fresh seafood at Todak Waterfront Hawker Center or ready cooked BBQ seafood at Night Food Market. More upmarket seafood are found in Warisan Square and opposite Jesselton Points operated by Chinese. There are actually so many more to put in writing.
There are also more upmarket seafood restaurants
Night market, Sunday market are everywhere and its a shopping paradise for cheap or imitation goods. Cheap handphone accessories are widely available in any malls. Local delicacies, dried fishes, prawns and sea cumber are plentiful
Places of interest are nothing great. It only has one particular landmark call the Atkinson Clock tower which boast at the oldest and simple structure in KK which is about 105 years old. And there is a Hainanese Clan Association which always arouse my kinship and affinity
