Sandakan Kinabatangan River Eco Tour

27 Oct

I had tim sum for breakfast at 6.30 am. This Chinese kopitiam is one of few chinese eateries left in the old city. Look at the push cart!

Today my itinerary is to go into the rainforest by taking a river boat on Kinabatangan River which cut through the jungle. It's sort of eco tour to see Sabah primates and other living creatures. After 2 hours of bus journey, the first stopover is to see the Gomantong Caves, home to the swiftlets that build the popular bird nests. These expensive nests from the cave ceilings are picked by local using elaborate methods.

After lunch my tour group rested at Bilit Adventure Lodge along the Kinabatangan River, Sabah longest river more than 500 km long. The tour guide Mr Wong gave a talk on Sabah primates

We started our boat ride down river.

Along the way, we saw Proboscis Monkey which is famed for its big nose. They perched high up the trees. These monkey are special as they cannot consumed fruits because the stomach cannot absorb sugar. The king male live with about 10 females.

According to our guide Wong, the Pygmy Elephants are only seen a few times a years. So it was our lucky day and as news passed around by boat men, all the tourists on this river rush here to enjoy the rare sighting.

The sighting of the Pygmies Elephant herd brought almost all the tourists around this area for this rare sighting. According to the guides, sighting are rare and only happens a few times a year as the elephants move in a 40 km circle within the jungle to forage for food.

I think the elephants are watching the human too.

And other creatures
