CHINA TIBET
JUNE 2007
DAY 3
QINGHAI
Jun 6
Due to the long journey expected for the day’s itineraries, we started off very before sunrise.
Our first stop was the Sun and Moon Mountain 日月山. There is a legend to this mountain on the Qinghai Tibet plateau and with altitude about 4000m above sea level. There is a Moon Pavilion and Sun Pavilion on each side of the mountain and Princess Wenchang was part of history here.
Qinghai Lake is a salt water lake and is the largest in China. It is also a sacred lake for Tibetan. We took a boat cruise on the lake.
We had
lunch in a small town along the route to our next itinerary. Here we saw
roasting of sheep outside the restaurant.
The last
itinerary was Ta’er Monastery. Also known as Kumbum Monastery was built in
1379, it is the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan
Buddhism. Its architecture blended both Tibetan and Han is also a stunning
repository of Tibetan arts and cultural relics.
It was early dinner and we board the train at Xining Railway Station for
a one day journey.
By 8 pm we have boarded the train. We checked into the cabin meant for 6
