CHINA TIBET D7 - JUNE 2007

TIBET JUNE 2007

DAY 7

Jun 10

LHASA - SHIGATSE

This was my third day in Tibet, “Roof of the World” I had acclimatized to the high altitude and the minor headache was gone and was used to the thin fresh air.  Tibet’s landscape is astoundingly beautiful. The mountains, hills, rivers, grasslands and the turquoise waters of the lakes with blue sky are in its own league to beauty. It’s just serene and viewing from the bus is the best way to enjoy the natural beauty. Photos below were taken from bus from Lhasa towards Yamdrok Lake.

The sparsely populated country with landscape changing from green to brown between valleys and mountains. The coach drove up to the Kampala Pass with elevation of 4749m, 15,500 feet. The road zig zag through mountains. Below are photos of drive near and through the Kampala Pass toward the Lake. It was a cloudy day and some scenes were submerged in cloud.

The coach stopped at a scenic spot overlooking the Yamdrok Lake for us to enjoy the panoramic view of this beautiful lake. Yamdrok Lake is one of the three holy lakes of Tibet. High up this mountain, the snow had not completely melted yet and temperature was cold especially when the wind blew. Today was a cloudy day and occasionally we felt enveloped in the thin cloud.

We had lunch in a small town .

The coach stopped along the way for a photo stop.

The road was mostly in the valley closely hugging the Yarlung Zangbo River as we drove towards Shigatse. These were the sceneries over an hour on the bus. There were mostly farmlands benefitting from the river water.

We reached Tashilunpo Monastery in the late afternoon after more than 8 hours.

Tashilunpo Monastery is a huge complex built by the first Dalai Lama in 1447 and became the residence of all the previous Panchen Lama. It is a historically and culturally important monastery in Shigatse.  The temple also housed the tallest and largest bronze Buddha statue in the world.

Views of the second largest city Shigatse from the Monastery.

We stayed in Shigatse for the night. Glimpse of the streets of Shigatse from the bus.
