Day 8
17 Dec 2023
Hue - Quang Ngai - Ly Son Island
It was a wet morning. The rain has been pouring on and off since midnight. It was drizzling when I walked to Hue Station in partial darkness.
The train I boarded was SE 5 and will take 6 hours to reach Quang Ngai.
Half an hour south of Hue, the train was travelling close to the shore line and this part of Vietnam is in a mountainous region. The train needed to slow down considerably to safely negotiated the turn around several mountains and through numerous tunnels. Had not been the rain, this ride could be very pretty scenic. I had a good view of the sea from my side. The roaring waves were ferocious as they pounded the sea shore.
After the train passed Danang, the rain stopped, The train continued to rumble through the flat plain of central Vietnam. The view were monotonous. It was vast agricultural land, with flooded paddy field already ploughed and ready for the rice planting season soon.
On all long haul train, hot meal, cooked in the train's kitchen are served on push carts. I ordered their set lunch for S$2.70. It's tasty but the meat a bit tough.
The train arrived at Quang Ngai Station around 12.15 pm. I hailed a taxi to drive me to Port Sa Ky pier. I planned to board the ferry at 1330 to Dao Ly Son.
It was a real disappointment. Ferry services were cancelled for today and tomorrow due to very rough sea. I found an accommodation near the pier and hope weather can miraculously changes for better tomorrow. I walked around this fishing port. It was quiet.
It was unlikely the sea condition will improve and I have decided to give Ly Son a miss and made adjustment to my trip.
