Mount Popa
is 50 km south east of Bagan. The car ride took 90 min. This mountain is an extinct volcano about
5000 feet on the Pegu Range with spectacular views. The place is dedicated to
animist spirits known as ‘Nats’. There are 777 steps to the shrine at the top
of the peak. It is a pilgrimage site and
worship centre with numerous Nat temples and relic sites atop the mountain. It
is considered the abode of Myanmar most powerful Nat.

It took
about 30 minutes to walk up on a covered walkway. Along the ways are many Nat
temples and shops as well as monkeys. No foot wears are allowed in accordance
to Buddhist religion.
